A work of considerable importance for the history of the English colonies in the West Indies, and that of the English navy. The initials on the titles are said to be those of Iean Clodoré, Secrétaire de Vaisseaux; the book is consequently attributed to "The Sieur de Clodoré" who is one of the principal figures in the narrative, the best Lieutenant of La Barre, and Governor of Martinique.-A map is said to have been issued with the book, but only a single copy is known which has it. 267 CLUTTERBUCK (James Bennett) Port Phillip in 1849, 12mo. map, cloth 1850 COATS' Geography of Hudson's Bay, by Barrow 1851-see HAKLUYT SOCIETY 268 CODICE FERNANDEZ LEAL, publicado por el Dr. Antonio Peñafiel, folio, the unique MS. on maguey-paper reproduced in facsimile in 12 large tinted plates with 4 pp. of letterpress description by Peñafiel

284 SCRITTI DI CRISTOFORO COLOMBO publicati ed illustrati da
Cesare de Lollis (con Supplemento), 4 vols. in 3, atlas 4to. with
facsimiles of all the autograph documents; sd.
Rome, 1892-94

The best critical book on the subject of the documents which exist for a history of
the life and labours of Columbus. On p. 125 of Vol. I, there is a small error in the
Latin text which has been pointed out elsewhere by the writer of this note. Lollis
thinks that there must have been a lacuna in the Spanish texts which give algodon filado
(line 15) as the Latin translation below (line 13, 14) has bombicis. . quod ipsi iam
noverant. He has failed to observe that the last four words are a translation of the
one word filado, and that he ought to have corrected noverant into neverant, as was
done in Silber's edition of the Latin Columbus letter.

[Rome or Naples, 1493] Italy, about 1892 25 0 Only 5 copies were printed of this typographical forgery. The intention was evidently to reproduce exactly the Ambrosian 4to., but the forgers were unable in several instances to make the text run line for line. Although the breadth of the lines is greater by the size of an “m,” than that of the lines in the original several devices had to be practised so as to secure complete conformity at the beginnings and endings. One point may be noted for the guidance of others. In the Nyma on the last page, the original has the words "marauilla del mudo "while in the forgery this phrase appears by oversight as "merauilla del mudo" (me in the first word being an Italianisation, and the stroke omitted over u in the third word which indicated mundo instead of mudo). There were two other distinct forgeries of the same Epistle, in which perhaps the same mistake may not have been made.

Primera Epistola del Almirante dando cuenta de su gran descubrimiento a D. Gabriel Sanchez . . Acompaña al texto original castellano el de la traduccion latina de 1493, y precede la noticia por el editor D. Genaro H. de Volafan [i.e. Varnhagen], 8vo. sd. Valencia, 1858

Privately printed from a MS. of the sixteenth century which may not have been derived from the printed folin (of Barcelona 1493) now in the Lenox library. This remains therefore a work of some intrinsic value. It contains an introduction, the two texts, notes and variants.
