shaved away; the marginal notes of the third leaf being also slightly cut into.

This curious tract relates to an unsuccessful attempt in which "We went from
Boston Thirty two Ships, and other Vessels, with about 2000 Men," and ends with a
paragraph stating that "This Expedition has brought the Colony of the Massachusets

Taxes.. granting forth Printed Bills.. by which some of the Soldiers and Seamen
are paid On the back of the same leaf, the author gives a printed facsimile of
a ten shilling bill of the kind referred to.
Barlow's copy fetched 180 dollars.

of the genuine issue of 1624 having portraits of King James, Queen Anne, and of the
bareheaded "Carolvs Princeps." The portrait of the Duchess of Richmond is a
genuine original impression of Delaram's plate; the maps of New England, of Ould
Virginia, and of the Summer Ils are in their original state as issued in 1624. The map
of Virginia bears the numbers "1690-1691" (altered from 1692-1693") which prove
that it was not printed before 1626, but this is the only point in which the volume
cannot be described as a veritable first issue of the book. The Matoaka portrait, which
of course does not belong to the book, was re-engraved in modern days, and a copy of
the re-engraving is inserted for the gratification of the purchaser.

The engraved title is of the unaltered 1624 issue; the portrait is a rare early impression of 1623; but the map of New England is not here, and the other three maps are of the 1626-28 issue.-As for the portrait, it is difficult to decide whether Passe's or Delaram's was the one intended for issue with the book. They were both done in 1623 from the same picture, but Passe's is a three-quarter length, while Delaram's goes no further down than the waist.
