"Lord Bacon has said that Gardening is the purest of human pleasures, and the greatest refreshment to the spirit of man.' He might have said much more-that it is the healthiest, the cheapest, the most reliable of all our recreations. It begins with our existence, for the love of flowers is innate, a memory of Paradise Lost, a hope of Paradise Regained, and, if we cherish it, never leaves us."-" Among my Books," by DEAN HOLE.

520 THE HONORABLE ALICIA AMHERST'S HISTORY OF GARDENING IN
ENGLAND, in one vol. royal 8vo. xiv and 408 pp. A NEW EDITION,
with 67 illustrations of Old English Gardens, and a revised text, extra
cloth
"A History of Gardening in England' by the Hon. Alicia Amherst. This is by
far the most interesting and remarkable book that I believe has ever been written on
the subject. The book is full of information, drawn from patient and most diligent
research, and will be of real utility to students of the literature and history of gardening
and to the owners of large places. It contains little that will practically help people who
live in cottages and small villas. It alludes only very indirectly to the beautiful illus-
trated flower books, especially the foreign ones, which so far exceed our own in artistic
beauty and skill. It is rather sad that when the Society of Gardeners wished to
illustrate their plants in 1736 they had to engage the services of Jacob van Huysum,
brother of the Dutch flower painter; and to this day the best periodical coloured flower-
printing, though painted by Englishmen is printed in Belgium (vide The Garden ').
Miss Amherst's book is one for constant reference; and the greater one's knowledge, the
greater will be one's appreciation of it."-Extract from Earle, "Pot Pourri from
a Surrey Garden."

554 AN OLD ENGLISH GARDEN, by the COUNTESS of WARWICK, folio, 26 beautiful photogravure plates of Lady Warwick's celebrated Garden at Easton Lodge, Essex, sumptuously printed on handmade paper, cloth gilt, gilt top

1898 This forms a most charming gift book, and will interest everyone who has a love for flowers and gardens.

Only 350 copies printed, now nearly all sold.

The Countess invests her flowers and gardens with emblematical sentiments that
savour of old days, and illustrates them by very happily selected quotations from the
poets. In addition, the work has a wider and more practical feature as it gives complete
lists of all the flowers, ferns, deciduous and flowering shrubs, evergreens, and coniferæ,
which, under the best advice, her ladyship has introduced into her gardens.

The illustrations are beautiful specimens of photogravure, produced by the Swan
Electric Engraving Co., from negatives specially taken for the work.
