RUTHERFORD BIRCHARD HAYES, the Republican candidate for President of the United States, was born in Delaware, Ohio, on the fourth of October, 1822. His ancestors settled in this country in the Seventeenth Century, and at once identified themselves with the commercial, political and religious interests of the land of their adoption. Possessing intelligence, refinement and patriotism, they were held in high esteem and honored as valued members of society. Some of them evinced their patriotism by their faithful services in the war of the Revolution, and patiently endured the privations and sufferings of that trying period of our national history. The blood that flowed in their veins belonged to the world's best type-the blood of noble England and sturdy Scotland. Descending from such ancestors it is not surprising that Rutherford Birchard Hayes should possess those qualities of heart and mind that form the basis of an energetic, solid and symmetrical character;
