This picture is incorrectly called the Reception of St. Amand; it is the Reception of St. Bavon, Count of Hasbaye, by St. Amand, founder of a convent near Tournay, and afterwards Bishop of Mastricht.

After a dissipated youth, Bavon was brought to repentance by the preaching of St. Amand; and so deep was his conviction, that he resolved to renounce the world. About the year 643, he confessed his sins to the Loly preacher, and demanded to assume the habit in the monastery of St. Peter, now that of St. Bavon.

This is the moment selected by Rubens, for the subject of his picture. In the foreground, one of the prince's servants is seen distributing alms to the poor, in the name of his master. The woman, on the left, is the Count's daughter, who also embraced the monastic life. The princess and her attendant are said to be the portraits of Rubens's wives, Elisabeth Brandt and Helen Forman.

This superb picture was painted for one of the altars of St. Bavon's church, at Ghent.
