E ANNOUNCING HIS DISCOVERY, WITH EXTRACTS FROM HIS JOURNAL. Our knowledge of the discovery of America by Columbus is based on his Journal and on letters which he wrote before reaching Spain, or immediately after. One of these letters, addressed to Luis de Sant Angel or Santangel, is here given. Santangel, Treasurer of Aragon, had befriended Columbus in his time of need, and had provided, by his influence, the funds for equipping the fleet. The original of this letter is lost, but a manuscript copy was in existence in the early years of the present century. Three printed copies have been found, though the genuineness of two of them have been doubted. The following translation is based on that in The Letter in Spanish of Christopher Columbus announcing the Discovery, London, Ellis and Elvey, 1889, which contains a fac simile copy of one of the suspected texts. This translation has been carefully compared with that by Major (Select Letters of Columbus, London, Hakluyt Society, 1870, pp. 1-17) and with that by Kettell (APersonal Narrative of the First Voyage of Columbus, Boston, 1827, pp. 253-264), and with the original Spanish text as given by Major.
