PREFACE. THE sermons contained in this volume are selected from those which the Bishop of Calcutta preached in India. At the request of the Clergy of one of the Presidencies, a request with which the editor has much gratification in complying-she has printed all the sermons preached within its limits, naming, both in the present volume and in that lately published, the station at which each was delivered. The Bishop was much struck with the situation and beauty of the Church of St. George, at Madras, standing, as he expressed it, "embosomed in palms." As he intended taking a sketch of it on his return from his southern visitation, for the frontispiece of a volume of Indian Sermons, the editor, before she left Calcutta, requested a friend to procure her an accurate drawing of the building, which she has prefixed to the present series. The Address on Confirmation will be read with melancholy interest, from the circumstance of its delivery having been the concluding act of her husband's public life; in less than two hours after he had thus earnestly exhorted his congregation, he was summoned to meet his Saviour!
