P. 257. 1. 27. The 55 Geo. 3. c. 158. I. recites the Additional sums statutes 32 Geo. 3. c. 16. Ir. and 54 Geo. 3. c. 131. I. and presented for that it is expedient to provide for the better payment pointed under of constables heretofore appointed or continued, who Ir. & 54 Geo.3. may hereafter be appointed or continued; and enacts, that c. 131. I. by grand juries at the grand jury of every county at large in Ireland, shall each assizes. and may, at every assizes, present any sum not exceeding £10. for every constable appointed or continued before the passing of this act, (11. July, 1815,) or who at any time after shall be appointed by the grand jury of such county, in every barony or half barony, under the authority of the said recited acts, or either of them, not exceeding such number as may by law be appointed in any one barony or half barony; and all sums so presented shall be levied out of such barony or half barony, in such proportion as the presentments of the county at large are raised on such baronies, &c.; and such sums shall be presented and raised for such constables, and shall be paid to them by the treasurers of the said counties respectively, under such rules and regulations as are required with respect to the presenting, &c. the sums payable to such constables, under any acts in force in Ireland immediately before the passing of this act. the service of such constable, and of his having executed such duty with diligence and fidelity, to order that such constable shall be superannuated, and receive such yearly allowance, remuneration, or superannuation, as to such lord lieutenant shall seem proper, upon the conditions, and not exceeding the proportions in this act mentioned; and thereupon such constable shall cease to hold such office, and the yearly sum to which he shall so become entitled shall be presented by the grand jury in two equal sums, one at each assize during his life, on its being proved to the satisfaction of such grand jury that such person is living. discharge the duties of his office; in which case, if he shall have served with diligence, &c. for 10 years, it shall be lawful to grant him an annual sum not exceeding one third of the salary of his office; if above 10 years and less than 20, any sum not exceeding one half of such salary; if above 20 years any sum not exceeding two thirds of such salary; and if such constable shall be above 60 years of age, and shall have served 15 years or upwards, it shall be lawful, although there shall be no such certificate of incapacity, to grant to him, by way of superannuation, any annual sum not exceeding two thirds of the salary of his office; if 65 years of age, and he shall have served 40 years, any sum not exceeding three fourths of such salary; if 65 years of age, and he shall have served 50 years, then any sum not exceeding the whole of such salary.

Order returned shall lie, next after 4 weeks from the first day on sessions and which such notice shall have been so published, be returned to the clerk of the peace in open court, and
