And from the Bofom of their native Clay
Sprung into Life, and caught the vital Ray.
Millions of footed Creatures range the Woods,
Millions with Fins divide the Crystal Floods;
Millions befides, with wanton Liberty,
On painted Wings rife finging to the Sky.
But laft of all, two of a nobler Kind,
After the brightest Model in his Mind,
With Care the Great Artificer defign'd:
Beyond his other Works, compleat and fair,
He form'd with ev'ry Grace the lovely Pair,
Adorn'd with Beauty, crown'd with Dignity,
Immortal, Godlike, Rational, and Free:
Serene Impreffions of a Stamp Divine,
Upon their matchlefs Faces clearly fhine:
In deep fufpence, and at themselves amaz'd,
With curious Eyes they on each other gaz'd;
Themfelves, and all the fair Creation round,
Survey, and still fresh Cause of Wonder found.

For now, in their Primaval Luftre gay,
The Earth and Heav'ns their utmoft Pride difplay.
The blazing Sun from his Meridian height,
Thro' an unclouded Sky darts round his flaming Light.
The Fields, the Floods, and all th' enlighten'd Air,
In open Day look ravishingly Fair.

The bright Carnation, and the fragrant Rose,
Their Beauties fresh with heav'nly Dew disclose.
The noble Amaranths fhow their purple Dye,
Splendid, as that which paints the Morning Sky.
Ten thoufand od'rous Flow'rs of various Hue,
In ev'ry Shade and Plain, fpontaneous grew;.
And down the fmooth Defcent of Verdant Hills,.
From Marble Fountains gufh a thoufand Rills;
Thro' many a pleasant Shade they murm'ring go,
And mingle with the larger Streams below,
Which thro' the flow'ry Vallies foftly flow;
And all along their lovely, fpacious Banks,
Immortal Trees are plac'd in equal Ranks,

Whose charming Shades might God himself delight,
And Angels from their Heav'nly Bow'rs invite.
Here gentle Breezes, from their fragrant Wings,
Shed all the Odours of a thoufand Springs:
Harmonious Birds among the Branches fing,
And all the Groves with cheatful Ecchoes ring.
Hail mighty Maker of the Universe !

My Song shall fill thy glorious Deeds rehearse:
Thy Praife, whatever Subject others chufe,
Shall be the lofty Theam of my afpiring Muse.

A PASTORAL, infcrib'd to the Honourable, Mrs.

By the fame Hand.

AMARYLLIS.

Hile swiftly down the Skies the Day defcends,
And rising Night the Ev'ning Shade extends ;
While pearly Dews o'er-fpread the fruitful Field,
And closing Flow'rs refreshing Odours yield,
Let us beneath these gentle Shades recite
What Love, and what the Rural Mufe Indites
Nor need we, in this clofe Retirement, fear
Left lift'ning Swains our Am'rous Secrets hear.
SILVIA.

To ev'ry Shepherd I wou'd mine proclaim,
Since Fair Corinna is my fofteft Theam;
A Stranger to the loofer Joys of Love,

My Thoughts alone the Warmth of Friendship prove;}
And, while its pure and facred Force I fing,
Chaft Goddefs of the Groves, thy Succour bring.
AMARYLLIS.

Propitious God of Love, my Breaft inspire
With all thy Charms, with all thy pleafing Fire:
Propitious God of Love, thy Succour bring,
While I thy Darling, thy Alexis fingi

Alexis, as the op'ning Bloffoms, Fair,
Lovely as Light, Soft as the yielding Air;
For him each Virgin fighs, and on the Plains
The matchless Youth without a Rival reigns;
With fuch an Air, with fuch a graceful Mien,
No Shepherd dances on the flow'ry Greeen:
Nor to the ecchoing Groves, and whifp'ring Springs,
In fweeter Strains the tuneful Co-------ve fings.
SILVIA.

Corinna's lovely as the breaking Day, And fuch a chearful Light her Eyes difplay: Where-e'er the comes, all fullen Care retires; And fprightly Joys, and Love, and gay Defires, In ev'ry Breaft the beauteous Nymph infpires. But oh methinks when the no more appears, The Plain a dark and gloomy Profpect wears; In vain the Streams roll on, the Eaftern Breeze Dances in vain among the trembling Trees: In vain the Birds begin their Ev'ning Song, And to the filent Night their Notes prolong. The Groves, the Cryftal Streams, and verdant Field, Corinna abfent, no Diverfions yield.

AMARYLLIS.

Alexis abfent, all the penfive Day
In fome obfcure Retreat I figh away;
All Day to the repeating Caves complain
In mournful Accents, and a dying Strain;
Dear, lovely Youth, I cry; and all around
The flatt'ring Vales reftore the tender Sound.
SILVIA.

On flow'ry Banks, to ev'ry murm❜ring Stream,
Corinna is my Mufe's conftant Theam;

'Tis fhe that does my artlefs Thoughts refine, And with her Name my nobleft Verse shall fhine. AMARYLLIS.

I'll twine fresh Garlands for Alexis Brows, And Confecrate to him my fofteft Vows:

The charming Youth fhall my Apollo prove,
Adorn my Songs, and tune my Voice to Love.

In Praise of MEMORY; infcrib'd to the Honourable the Lady WORSely.

By the fame Hand.

Beft the bar futert Happines we owe;

Eft Gift that Heav'ns Indulgence cou'd bestow!

Thou all the flying Pleasures doft reftore,
Which, but for thee, bleft Mem'ry, were no more:
For we no fooner grafp fome frail Delight,
But, ready for its everlafting Flight,
Ere we can call the hafty Bliss our own,
If not retain'd by thee, it is for ever gone.
Thou to the fond fuccefsful Lover's Heart,
A thousand melting Raptures doft impart;
When, yet more lovely than herself, and kind,
Thou bring'ft his fancy'd Miftrefs to his Mind;
The flatt'ring Image wears a livelier Grace,
A fofter Mien, and more inticing Face.

Thou from the flying Minutes doft retrieve
The Joys, Chlorinda's Wit and Humour give,;
Thofe Joys that I had once poffefs'd in vain,
Did not the dear Remembrance ftill remain :
She fpeaks, methinks, and all my Soul infpires,
Brightens each Thought, and gives my Muse new Fires;
'Tis the that lends my daring Fancy Wings,
Softens my Lyre, and tunes its warbling Strings.
Thou only to the Guilty art fevere,

Who the Review of their past Actions fear;
But to the Innocent and Virtuous Mind,
Art ftill propitious, fmiling ftill, and kind.
To thee we all those charming Pleafures owe,
The Pleasures that from gen'rous Actions flow,
And they are ftill the nobleft we possess below.

An Imitation of a Paftoral of Mrs. KILLIGRE W's.

MIRTILLA.

ET fragrant Eastern Breezes round thee play,

Land oqining Bloffoms ftill adorn thy Way,

Let bubbling Fountains murmur to thy Sleep,.
And Pan himself the while protect thy Sheep;
Thy wanton Herds thro' verdant Pastures ftray,
Paftures like thee, all flourishing and gay.
And when with guiltless Sports, the Rival Swains,
For rural Glory ftrive upon the Plains,
Still, brave Alexis, let the Prize be thine,
And on thy Brows the fairest Garland shine.
ALEXIS.

Unfading Wreaths may'ft thou, Myrtilla, gain,
And deathless Honours by thy Verse obtain;
May fuch smooth Numbers warble from thy Tongue,
As late the skilful Melibus fung.

MYRTILLA.

No fuch ambitious Aim my Mind pursues, "ris Love, ah charming Youth! infpires my Mufe: Could I but pleafe thee with my artless Lays, I proudly hou'd neglect all other Praise; Woud'ft thou be grateful, ev'ry Grove, and Stream, And founding Vale, fhou'd eccho with thy Name; Each Rock, each winding Cavern and Retreat, The foft inchanting Accents hou'd repeat: And if my Mufe Immortal Fame cou'd give, Thy Name in deathless Numbers fhou'd furvive.

ALEXIS.

-Secure from Fate, he needs no further crave,
Who fuchlafting Monument may have:
But oh his Glory ne'er can be improv'd,
Who by the bright Lycoris has been lov'd,
