Any one who has read LONDON
"Timothy's Quest" will SUN.

DAILY
TELEGRAPH. know what to expect from
Mrs. Wiggin—something

half-way between tears and laughter, humor
and pathos; the tragi-comedy of simple hu-
man lives, possessing, whatever else they
may be devoid of, an undeniable charm... ́
It is the extraordinarily acute perception,
the happiness of phrase, the naturalness of
the manner which constitute the charm of
The Village Watch-Tower". as well as

the absence of anything artificial or labored, the justness and appropriateness of the strokes with which the portraits are completed. Mrs. Wiggin has a keen sense of

fun, but it is of the quiet meditative sort, which comes nearer to humor, and realizes what, after Virgil, we call "the sense of tears

in human things."

Undoubtedly by far the most artistic and convincing book she has yet given us. It excels in

many and diverse directions. The note is
varied the tone is full; pathos and humor
pass and repass into one another without let
or hindrance; each story is complete and
polished. Better workmanship it were im-
possible to ask; and Mrs. Wiggin's art is
doubly happy in concealing itself, without a
shadow of affectation or of conscious artifice.
And this is the height of art.

No greater service has been rendered the kindergarten cause by Americans

than the writing and printing, in the inimitable style of these authors, their talks and conferences on Froebel's educational principles, with groups of earnest young women in the leading cities of the country during the past fifteen years. These volumes will give to the world practically all the richest thought of these sister geniuses regarding the kindergarten. Those who have listened to either of these women will readily appreciate how impossible it is for a reviewer to give any idea of the brightness and good sense presented in these pages. — New England Journal of Education.

The History of the Plimoth Plantation

WRITTEN BY WILLIAM BRADFORD

One of the Founders and Second Governor of that Colony. Reproduced in facsimile by photography of the Original Manuscript. With an Introduction by John A. Doyle, Fellow of All Souls' College, Oxford

THIS

"HIS Manuscript contains an account of the settlement in Holland, first at Amsterdam, and afterwards at Leyden, of the community of Puritan Separatists, commonly known as Brownists; of their departure from Holland and embarkation at Southampton in 1620 in the Mayflower; of the voyage of the Pilgrim Fathers to America; of the foundation by them of the "Plimoth Plantation," and of the history and government of the Plantation until 1646. The manuscript consists of 280 folio pages, in Governor William Bradford's own handwriting, which is an example of clear and beautiful penmanship. Alimited number of copies have been produced by photography, and each copy is numbered. They are printed on fine hand-made paper. It is a work of remarkable interest to scholars and collectors. Mr. Doyle, who writes the Introduction, has made a thorough study of the subject, as his published works amply prove. The work forms a handsome quarto, and the price is $25.00, net.

THE SUPPLY AT
SAINT AGATHA'S

By ELIZABETH STUART PHELPS.

Beautifully printed on deckle edge paper of high quality, and artistically bound in cloth with a distinctive cover design by Mrs. Whitman. With Illustrations by Mr. E. BOYD SMITH and Mrs. CHARLES H. WOODBURY. Square 12m0, $1.00.

The hundreds of thousands who have read and been profoundly moved by "The Gates Ajar;" the additional scores of thousands who have read and are reading with the deepest interest Miss Phelps's latest novel, "A Singular Life," these certainly require no prompting to read or re-read her story of "The Supply at St. Agatha's. It is, in fact, one of the strongest, most suggestive, most illuminating of all the stories Miss Phelps has written. The setting of the story is vigorous and skillful, the narrative is rapid and engrossingly interesting, and the revelation of the "Supply" reaches to the inmost thoughts and emotions of men. The wonderful story is appropriately illustrated by Mr. E. Boyd Smith and Mrs. Charles H. Woodbury, who have rendered with exquisite feeling the delicate sentiment of the author. Both in the profound interest and significance of the story, and in the attractive style of the book, it is an unusually choice gift.

A SINGULAR LIFE

By ELIZABETH STUART PHELPS.
Fifteenth Thousand. 16mo, $1.25.

Of course the best public always expects something good from the author of
"The Gates Ajar," and gets it. "A Singular Life" is earnest, thoughtful, and
intensely religious in the best sense, and it is more: it is dramatic, a moving
story, informed with vivid and vigorous life. The author's peculiarities of
thought and style mark it with what her readers have learned to love in all
of her best works. We point it out as one of the strongest of recent novels.
-The Independent (New York).

The closing chapters of the tale are wonderfully impressive in their artistic finish and depth of feeling. "A Singular Life" is something more than a successful literary performance; it takes hold on the elemental traits of humanity and involves contrasts of character that are filled with a profound and ethical meaning. — Boston Beacon.

The story is absorbing in interest, vivid and intense. The Advance (Chicago).
