so excellently and admirably, we may say that her art books are more worthy of it than any and all her other books, charming and scholarly as they are."

These have been edited with equal intelligence and thoroughness by Miss Estelle M. Hurll, correcting Mrs. Jameson where very rarely she needed correction, supplementing with the knowledge gained since she wrote, and prefixing a valuable memoir of Mrs. Jameson. The volumes are better equipped than they have ever been with illustrations of the topics and pictures discussed by Mrs. Jameson, each volume of the five having nearly one hundred designs selected from the works of great masters. The books are printed from large type, on paper of fine quality, and the binding is simple but artistic. If the treatment of these volumes falls in any respect short of the ideal style of such works, it can be said with perfect truth that it is in all points the best yet devoted to these interesting and permanently valuable books.

An Ideal Traveler.

In a most delightful review of Rev. Francis Tiffany's charming book of travel, This Goodly Frame, the Earth, Rev. S. M. Crothers, in the Christian Register, says, among scores of other just and felicitous remarks: "While the body is traversing space, the mind is making still longer excursions into past time, and visiting the scenes we dream of. Here is the kind of a traveler who will have time to call at Colchis and make kindly inquiries about the golden fleece.

"What a pleasure awaits the reader, on some winter evening, when he comes to the chapters on Agra and Delhi! He is not merely taken to the British India of the present, but he catches an entrancing glimpse of the India of the Moguls, -vast, mysterious, luxurious. He is transported to the times when

'In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree.'

There is exquisite art in the contrast between the light touch of the chapters on Japan and the sombre reflections which come in the presence of the deserts and the temples of Egypt. But the reflections are never too long. drawn out, and the reader is not asked to take them too seriously. . . . The author's deepest impressions are evidently not of 'scenes, incidents, and persons' so much as of the principles, ideals, and persistent forces which have moulded the countries through which he has passed. We are made to see, not Chinamen, Hindus, and Egyptians, but China, India, and Egypt. Above all, the author loves to place before us the religion of each land as the best expression of its interior life."

The Boston Advertiser remarks: "Mr. Tiffany's mind is delicately sensitive to impressions, and his style of recording them is wonderfully pure, lucid, and graphic."

Mr. Burroughs has probably interpreted nature to a greater number of his contemporaries than any other writer of his time. - The Outlook.

He is of the same breed as Gilbert White, of Selborne, as Audubon, as Thoreau, and he combines their exactitude of observation, their scientific sympathy, with more careful study of style than they chose to give in jotting down their impressions. - The Saturday Review (London.)
