+ Magnificat. S. Luke 1. 46.

(This shall be faid or fung after the first Lesson in the Evening Service.)

M

Y foul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his hand-maiden. * For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. F.

For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all

generations.

He hath shewed strength with his arm : proud in the imagination of their hearts.

He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek.

He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away.

He remembring his mercy, hath holpen his servant Ifrael: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his feed for ever. Glory be to the Father, &c.

As it was in the beginning, &c.

Paraphrafe on the MAGNIFICAT.

I joyfully praise God my Saviour: because he hath deigned to shew fuch regard to his Servant in her lowly flation-For henceforth future Ages will pronounce me truly happy; fince he who is infinitely powerful and holy hath been pleased to bestow upon me this honour: tho' his kindness indeed extends to persons of every Nation and Condition that truly serve him---He hath

wonderfully disappointed the expectations of the ambitious. He hath depressed the proud Rulers of the Earth, and exalted the lowly in Heart. He hath filled those who hunger after Righteousness with the bounties of his Grace, but the rich in Spirit he hath rejected. He hath sent forth a Saviour to Ifrael as he promised to Abraham and his Seed.

* For behold from henceforth, &c. On this passage the Church of Rome seems to have founded, in fome measure, that adoration which she pays to the Virgin. Mary; through a mistaken interpretation of the Word Blessed: which, in the Scriptures, when it relates to a human person, generally fignifies happy.

Cantate Domino. Pfalm 98.

O praise the Lord with unusual Fervency, for he hath wrought wonderful Things for us. By his own mighty power he hath vanquished our Foes. - He hath granted us a remarkable Deliverance in the fight of the Nations around us. He hath performed the gracious promises which he made to Ifrael; and all the World must own him to be a Saviour indeed-Otherefore express your joyful Gratitude to him, ye favoured people, in Hymns of praise: and with your Voices unite

every melodious Instrument, to heighten your Devotion, and help you worthily to celebrate Jehovah your King-Let the loud Ocean, and its Fullness, the Earth and its Inhabitants join the folemn Concert.-Let the Floods pour forth in full streams their applause; and the Mountains exulting raise their lofty Heads; for the Lord reigneth over all the Kingdoms of the World with Justice and Equity. All Glory, &c.

Paraphrafe on the Second Collect at Evening Prayer. O God, who workest in us both to will and to do of thy good pleasure: grant us that peace of mind which nothing on earth can bestow; that we may not only be the better disposed to obey thy commandments; but also that, being in safety under thy protection, we may pass through this life with quietness, and comfortable hopes of a better through Jesus Chrift.

Paraphrafe on the third Collect at Evening Prayer. Protect us, O Lord, we beseech thee, this night from all things that may injure either our fouls or bodies, for the fake of thy Son's love to mankind.

* That Peace which the World, &c. To this those beautiful lines in Mr. Pope's Esssay on Man seem to allude. What nothing earthly gives, nor can destroy The Souls calm funshine, and the heart felt joy, Is Virtue's prize.

Paraphrafe on the Prayer for the King.

O gracious God, who rulest over all the Kingdoms of the Earth; we earnestly intreat thee to bless our most benevolent Sovereign King George; and so influence him, by thy Holy Spirit, that he may always be disposed for thy service and obey thy Commandments: give him Wisdom and Knowledge to promote the welfare of his People-----Grant him Health, long Life, and Profperity,---enable him to subdue all his Enemies; and after this Life advance him to an eternal Crown of Happiness through Jesus Christ.

|| When the shades of darkness are approaching we are going to give up ourselves to the defenceless state of fleep; and how reasonable is it for us to implore the protection of that God who neither slumbereth nor leepeth.
