ANNUAL REPORT.

THE Eighteenth Annual Report of the Chamber of Commerce of the State of New-York, comprising the transactions of the Institution from May, 1875, to May, 1876, and the usual trade notices, is now submitted to the members. Its well known form is adhered to. Part I. contains a Record of the Proceedings of the Chamber, Selections from the Decisions of the Court of Arbitration, Roll of Members, Charter, By-Laws, Rules and Forms of Procedure of the Court of Arbitration, and a List of Donations to the Library. Part II. includes Special Reports on various branches of Trade, and numerous tabular statistics of Trade and Finance.

The value of these Annual Reports is well known to our older members. They contain, in simple and compact form, all important statistics published by the General and State Governments, presented in a new and original manner, easy of comprehension and reference. They present a faithful picture of the growth and distribution of the Commerce of the Nation and State, with comparisons, especially showing the commercial progress of New-York City. The information distributed through scores of volumes is here digested in a few important and comprehensive tables. Among them are statements of the Public Debt, National, State and Municipal; the progress of exportation and importation, with details of the movement and origin of the great staples shipped or consumed; the increase of tonnage engaged in foreign and coast wise trade; the condition of Banking and Insurance Companies, and the latest figures of immigration and population. The whole forming a Reference Book of extreme value to the merchant at home or abroad.

During the past year the Chamber, without undertaking labor in new directions, has confined itself to a care of those interests directly entrusted to its charge, and a watchful observation of all legislation immediately affecting the commerce of the City. Chief among its solicitudes has been the management of the Erie Canal, the great avenue by which the products of the West reach tide-water.
