The Galaxy, Volume 24, Issue 1 - Volume 25, Issue 1William Conant Church W.C. and F.P. Church, 1877 The Galaxy was best known for the pages it devoted to fiction in each and every issue. At least one serial, sometimes two or three, and a number of short stories and poems were included. Richard Grant White, Justin McCarthy, Rebecca Harding Davis, Jane G. Austin, and Paul Hamilton Hayne (to name only a few) contributed often. However, the most popular section was entitled "Memoranda." This was written and edited by Mark Twain. Although the department appeared for only a year, it was then that the magazine reached its highest circulation. By 1878, circulation had declined greatly and the Galaxy was absorbed by the Atlantic Monthly. |
