PUBLISHERS' NOTICE.

The publishers of THE NATIONAL TRIBUNE disclaim all responsibility for the opinions expressed by the author of this history. They are his own. The book has the greatest value as contemporary history. In many ways a history written while the flames and seethe of the conflict are still at their hottest has a value that those written later and with more calmness cannot have. What these last gain in judicial impartiality they lose in failure to show the fierce, forceful passions which swayed and complicated the conflict. There were many diverg ing interests and strong partisan antagonisms that lined up under the banner of the Union. Mr. Headley represents the views of one very powerful element among them, or rather the way they viewed it in the latter years of the war; and consequently the book has a value which it would not have if written to-day, with those views modified by the fuller light that we now have, and the justification of time upon many things that were then done. As a chronicle of the momentous

events of the war and a description of its battles and episodes

it is a great literary and historical work.
