cause, as the flower of the grass, he shall pass away. For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof fall eth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth; so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for, when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Let no man say, when he is tempted, I am tempted of God; for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man; but every tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then, when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin; and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

THE COLLECT.

WE pray, O merciful God, that all holy affections may be established in our hearts, and mani

ded against itself, is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth. If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub. And if I by Beelzebub cast

your

out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be judges. But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace; but when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armor wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. He who is not with me, is against me; and he who gathereth not with me, scattereth. When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house, whence I came out. And

when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh to himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in, and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first.

Eph. v. 1-14.

BE ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; and walk in love, as Christ

also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savor. But fornication and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named amongst you, as becometh saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not proper; but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no fornicator, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ, and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words; for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them; for ye were once darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord; walk as children of light, (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, and righteousness, and truth,) proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of dark

ness, but rather reprove them; for it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. But all things that are reproved, are made manifest by the light;

a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat? (And this he said to prove him; for he himself knew what he would do.) Philip answered him, two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one may take a little. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him, There is a lad here, who hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes; but what are they among so

many? And Jesus said,

Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them who were set down, and likewise of the fishes, as much as they would. When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments which remain, that nothing be lost. Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above, unto those who had eaten. Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said,

This is of a truth that Prophet, who should come into the world.

James iv. 8-14.

DRAW nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts ye double-minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep; let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. not evil one

There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy; who art thou that judgest another? Go to now, ye that say, To day or to-morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy, and sell, and get gain; whereas ye know not what shall

be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appear

THE COLLECT.

O GOD, whose nature and property is ever to have mercy and to forgive, receive our humble petitions; and though we be tied and bound with the chain of our sins, yet let the pitifulness of thy great mercy loose us, through Jesus Christ our

Saviour. Amen.

THE GOSPEL.

John viii. 46-59.

JESUS said, Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? He, who is of God, heareth God's words; ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God. Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well, that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil? Jesus answered, I have not a devil;

Heb. ix. 11-15.

CHRIST, being come, an high priest of good things to be, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; neither by the blood of goats, and calves, but by his own blood, entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

but I honor my Father, and
ye do dishonor me. And I ple.
seek not mine own glory;
and there is one that seek-
eth and judgeth. Verily,
verily, I say unto you, If a
man keep my saying, he
shall never see death. Then
said the Jews unto him,
Now we know that thou
hast a devil. Abraham is
dead, and the prophets; and
thou sayest, If a man keep
my saying, he shall never
taste of death. Art thou
greater than Our father
Abraham, who is dead?
and the prophets are dead;
who makest thou thyself?
Jesus answered, If I honor
myself, my honor is nothing;
it is my Father who honor-
eth me, of whom ye say,
that he is your God; yet ye
have not known him; but I
know him; and if I should
say, I know him not, I shall
be a liar like unto you; but I
know him, and keep his say-
ing. Your father Abraham
rejoiced to see my day, and
he saw it and
was glad.
Then said the Jews unto
him, Thou art not yet fifty
years old, and hast thou
seen Abraham? Jesus said
unto them, Verily, verily, I
say unto you, Before Abra-
ham was, I am. Then took
they up stones to cast at
him; but Jesus hid himself,

For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And for this cause he is the Mediator of the new testament, that by means of death for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they who are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritence.
